FLORENCE, Ala. - Four ensembles from the UNA Department of Music have been chosen to perform at the 2016 Alabama Music Educators Association (AMEA) annual conference in Montgomery January 21 and 22.
"We are very proud of the growth and development of our music program over the past few years," said department chair David McCullough."The AMEA performance invitations to four of our ensembles in the same year is a tremendous honor for us, as well as confirmation of the respect that our music colleagues around the state have for the work that is being done here at UNA."
The Shoals Symphony at UNA, under the direction of conductor Daniel Stevens, will perform on Thursday, January 21, at 3:30 p.m. in the Montgomery Performing Arts Center. The symphony will perform works by Humperdinck, Schubert and Strauss. This performance will be the first time the Shoals Symphony at UNA has performed at the AMEA conference.
The UNA Percussion Group, directed by Tracy Wiggins, will perform Friday, January 22, at 8 a.m. in the Montgomery Performing Arts Center. The group features four UNA percussion students, three of whom performed with the 2013 Percussive Arts Society Drumline Battle-winning "Pride of Dixie" drumline.
On Friday, January 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the Renaissance Ballroom A, the UNA Chamber Choir and Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by Ian Loeppky, will perform. The Chamber Choir will perform more traditional works while the Vocal Jazz Ensemble will present modern pieces, including the current pop hit "Chandelier" by Sia. The combined choirs will close the performance with the traditional spiritual "Wade in De Water."
AMEA is the premiere organization for music educators, elementary through higher education, throughout the state of Alabama, and is part of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME).
